... Several years ago you worked for Hermès, one of the world’s most prominent luxury brands. Where do you set the limit which prevents you, as an artist, from being co-opted by commerce?
There are such limits of course. I spent a long time considering whether to offer an artistic interpretation of the ‘Monde Hermès’. I finally decided to do so because it means something different today than it did twenty or thirty years ago; the fashion world has become much more finely attuned to art, and the art world is permeated by fashion. Indeed, I regard fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen as splendid artists. But first and foremost, I did no advertising for Hermès, and no single photo or motif may be used for advertising purposes; they are only permitted to exhibit the works and illustrate them in their in-house magazine. I was excited because this is a completely luxury segment. I couldn’t imagine how off pitch and unbelievable it all is. ...
