South America, upper reaches of the Amazon River, tribe: Ticuna Indians: A blowpipe, with a mouthpiece made of wood. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

The Ticuna live near the upper Amazon River, on the border of Brazil, Columbia and Peru. The present blowpipe comes from a Ticuna village on the Cotuhe River, in the region near the town of Leticia in Columbia. Although they hunt large-size animals, such as the tapir, with the rifle, the Ticuna still use the blowpipe today to hunt apes and birds. These blowpipes are made of wood, using two long, straight halves that are subsequently tightly wrapped with bast strips and glued with tree resin. The thick, round hard-wood mouthpiece carved in the shape of a double cone is lodged at the lower, slightly wider end and firmly attached to the actual pipe by means of tree resin. ‘Iron sights’, also glued to the pipe with tree resin, give the blowpipe great accuracy. A complete, old piece, with good usage patina. Minor age-related damage. First half of the 20th century; L: 285 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
