The image, in the typical style of Australian Aborigines, depicts a rhomb-shaped lake at its centre. Trees stand on the shores of the lake (in the upper and lower sections). To the right of the lake are two crocodiles, their heads symmetrically facing each other. One light-coloured crocodile (above) and one black crocodile (below). The lake at the centre is also divided in two halves by means of a black line. Both the bipartition in one light-coloured and one dark animal, as well as the halving of the waterhole can be interpreted as a probable allusion to the social structure of the clan or tribe to which the author of the painting belonged, namely as a division into one ‘female’ and one ‘male’ half. The painting is executed with natural colours: colourful earths, white clay and soot. The picture, painted on a wavy piece of eucalyptus bark, was professionally mounted on a wooden screen in Europe. Provenance: Purchased by Prof. Dr. Jan Jelinek during his first ‘Czechoslovak scientific expedition’ directly from the Aborigines in Arnhem Land, Northern Australia, in 1969. Since then preserved in the family collection in Brno, Czech Republic.
