Mixed lot (5 items): New Guinea, Highlands, tribe: Enga; 5 stone blades for stone axes. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Among the Papua in the highlands of New Guinea, the blanks for stone axe blades were struck in special stone quarries, then laboriously flaked and shaped into usable forms in the water of creeks, entirely by hand and using other stones (stone on stone, without metal!), and finally polished. The present mixed lot of five, partly already used stone blades was purchased in the territory around the village of Wabag in the western highlands, from the tribe of the Enga: an oblong blade of gray green stone, a flat cut blade of white stone, as well as 3 blades of different format made of black stone. All completely cut and polished (only some minor pieces broken off). First half of the 20th century; L: 20.5 cm, 14 cm, 12 cm, 9.8 cm and 9 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
