A ‘khanjar’ curved dagger from Oman, with lightweight, curved, double-edged blade, with continuous medial ridge. The hilt, made of dark horn, is covered in geometrical, shiny silver, as well as with a band made of sheet silver. With embossed leafy tendril volutes (on the front) and punched, geometrical rhombs (on the back). The top of the bivalve, wooden sheath displays decorations consisting of embossed leafy tendril volutes in sheet silver, below which, in the centre, is dense geometrical embroidery made of fine silver wire, as well as a ‘shoe’ made of detailed decorated silver on the lower end. The backside of the sheath is covered with dark blue velvet. The fastening for the belt, in the centre of the sheath, consists of layers of leather straps. They are decorated with engraved and punched sheet silver, four silver rings and silver wire. The leather belt, probably created at a later time than the curved dagger, is likewise embroidered with geometrical decorations made of fine silver wire and displays a cast buckle made of brass, as well as a decorative silver half-circle, one Indian and two Omani coins (minting: 1961). A beautiful piece in a perfect state of preservation. Around the mid-20th century; H: 29 cm (dagger with sheath), W: 85 cm (belt with dagger). (ME)
