Topoke, Democratic Republic of Congo: An old ‘knick shield’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A typical shield of the Topoke (also called Eso or Tofoke). From Northeast Congo. These Topoke shields are made of wood and are always constructed with a significant diagonal dent in the middle. The shield is overall coloured in black and braided with narrow rattan strips and with diagonal stitching on its front side above and below, as well as on the side edges. The central, anterior surface made of thin wood displays remnants of additional light-coloured, geometrical colouring. The backside consists of semicircular bamboo slats one on top of the other, which are braided in their entirety with rattan strips. The grip, too, consists of plaited rattan strips. Overall a very well-preserved object with minimal age-related damage to the edges and corners, as well as with old usage patina (especially on the grip). First third of the 20th century; H: 112 cm, W: c. 44 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Lit.: ‘Afrikanische Schilde’ by Plaschke and Zirngibl, ill. 82; ‘Shields’ by Benitez & Barbier. ill. 18, p. 70, 71.
