Mossi, Burkina Faso: A finely crafted staff of office.
A rod with a bifurcated, double grip on top. Both upper ends trimmed with decorated brass rings. The handle sits atop an oblong, rectangular stake with incised decorations consisting of lines and crosses. The centre portion of the rod consists of a stylised female figure in the form of a typical Mossi doll, called ‘biga’. Two recumbent crocodiles, facing each other, connect below. A very carefully crafted piece. First half of the 20th century; L: 136 cm. (ME)
