Kongo (or Bakongo), Democratic Republic of Congo: A very old ivory trumpet with a seated figure.
A transverse horn made of old ivory. Its lower half is wrapped with wickerwork made of rattan strips. On top sits a ‘king’, chief or another important dignitary with crossed legs. He holds a vessel in his left hand. An exceptional old piece with shiny, red-brown to almost black patina! With fine cracks beneath the oval blow hole and on the top of the figure, two small cracks at the very bottom. A ‘museum-quality’ piece! 19th century to c. 1900. L: c. 60 cm. (ME) ASA
