Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: A very rare terracotta mask, worn only by the women of the Makonde.
The men of the Makonde dance in their dance group with the well-known helmet mask made of wood, called ‘lipiko’ (see cat. no. 125). The women of the Makonde, however, use masks such as these made of terracotta. During dances on the occasion of the initiation of young girls. They are worn over the forehead. The present mask consists of grey, fired terracotta and is painted red-brown on the front. It displays v-shaped scarification marks on the forehead, a line along the length of the nose, stakes in the ears and a lip plug, such as worn by the Makonde women (with fabric inlay). The ‘coiffure’ consists of glued, black, real human hair. A rare piece with good, old usage patina and only minor age-related damage (colour scuffed). An authentic rarity! First half of the 20th century or earlier. H: 13 cm, DM: c. 18 cm. (ME)
