Chokwe, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia: A chief mask of the ‘cihongo’ type.

Chokwe, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia: A chief mask of the ‘cihongo’ type. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

In the past, only the Chokwe chief or one of his sons danced with this type of mask, called ‘cihongo’ mask, when they went on ‘reconnaissance journeys’ through the villages of their dominion. With these masks, they emphasised - in full body costumes and wild dance leaps - their strength, power and authority, collected tributes and pronounced judgements. The present ‘cihongo’ mask is made of hard wood and dyed black on the front side. It displays the typical Chokwe style with deep-set eyes, an open mouth with teeth carved from the same piece, and with the characteristic, round protruding goatee of ‘cihongo’ masks. An old piece, with good usage patina and minor age-related damage on the back rim. First half to mid-20th century; h: 24 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian collection.

Lit.: ‘La Sculpture Tshokwe’ by Marie-Louise Bastin, ill. 34 to 37; ‘Chokwe’ by Manuel Jordan, ill. 69, 70, 71; ‘Afrikanische Kunst - Schätze vom Zaire’ by Joseph Cornet, ill. 86; et al.
