Mumuye, Nigeria: An old buffalo helmet mask. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A very old helmet or head crest mask in the shape of a buffalo head or a bush cow. Made of light-coloured, soft wood, remains of red colouring on the outside. Among the Mumuye and their neighbours (Yakoko, Jompre and others) on the Benue river in northeast Nigeria, these masks are worn only by old men on their heads. The present mask is unusually old, with traces of usage on the inside as well as on the outside, and age-related damage (edges chipped, a fracture with original repair at the lower margin on the back). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; H: 18 cm, L: 48 cm, W: 24 cm. (ME)
