Eket, Nigeria: An unusually large and rare female figure.
A female figure made of brown wood, originally coloured black and brown, standing on a small plinth. With detached, slightly bent arms and a typical ‘Eket face’: concave, with lowered eyelids, small, upturned nose and a narrow mouth at the lower end of the face. Neck and arm jewels are carved out from the same piece, as are also the scarification marks on the body. This sculpture is either part of a tall dance crest (‘ogbom’) or an ancestor figure associated to the ‘Ekpe society’ of the Eket. An object with extraordinarily good, old, partly shiny patina and age-related damage (tears, parts scuffed, minor pieces broken off). The small, circular masks of the Eket are more frequent, but whole figures - especially as large as the present one - are extremely rare! First third of the 20th century; H: 101 cm. (ME)
