Dominated by the presence of Vesuvius in the background, the present lot depicts the Neapolitan countryside. It illustrates the artist’s interest in Vesuvius which he painted several times between 1871–73. Where earlier depictions were influenced by the technique of painting en plein air, his later works incorporate lighter, Impressionist forms of light.
