In March 1859, Schäfer took three pictures of Schopenhauer in a single day, two of which have been preserved; the plate of the third being destroyed in fire. The two pictures are among the best known portraits of the philosopher, frequently reproduced in the form of etchings (eg by Emil Orlik), engravings, and paintings.
