Gregorio Guglielmi, pupil of Sebastiano Conca and Francesco Trevisani, belongs to the most important Italian freso painters of the second half of the 18th century. Only few of his commissions in Rome, Turin, St. Petersburg, Augsburg, Berlin and Warsaw have survived. The fresco cycle in Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna (c. 1754-61) is among his most important works. The cycle represents an apotheosis of the reign of Maria Theresa who is surrounded by the personification of the sovereign virtues. Allegories of the crownlands and their riches are surrounding the central motif. The present drawing may be a preliminary study for one of the virtues.
