According to Prof. Angela Ghirardi the complex architecture with niches, columns, pilasters, inscription panels and the ornamental decoration of flower- and fruit garlands could point to a design for a marble altar or a wall relief. The work may have been assigned to the artist by members of the Franciscan Order which supported by the representation of Saints Francis of Paolo and Francis of Assisi. Prof. Ghirardi dates the drawing based on stylistic grounds to 1575.
