We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD for confirming the present painting as an authentic work by Abraham Brueghel.

Abraham Brueghel was the most gifted and most successful son of Jan Brueghel II. He was his father’s apprentice and later settled in Rome, where he quickly became known as a still life painter. As early as 1649, when he was 18 years old, nine of his floral paintings are mentioned in the inventory of his patron, Don Antonio Ruffo. His works were influenced by Italian contemporaries such as Michelangelo Campidoglio and Michelangelo Cerquozzi; concurrently the strict composition and detailed precision reveal his Nordic heritage. Brueghel moved to Naples around 1670, where he remained for the rest of his life.
