We are grateful to Mr Laurens Schoemaker of the RKD for his kind assistance in cataloguing of the present painting. He compares it to a signed seascape by Anthonissen, which was located in the Vermeulen Gallery, The Hague, in 1964 (RKD, ill. no. 18314). Typical of Anthonissen is the frigate in the background, visible in many of his works, the somewhat incorrect foreshortening, the white seagulls before the dark grey waters, and the white sails on the horizon.
