Marshal Turenne is regarded as France’s most important military strategist after Napoleon. His rise began during the Thirty Years’ War. The success of his campaigns in the German Southwest under King Louis XIV led to the conquest of Alsace, which thus became French. In 1675 he was killed in the battle of Sasbach, in the region of the Prince-Bishopric of Strasbourg to the right of the Rhine.
