Johann Heinrich Ramberg
(Hanover 1763–1840)
Portrait of an elegant lady in classical robes,
oil on canvas, 81.5 x 63.3 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof Helmut Börsch-Supan for identifying the artist. He writes: “I regard this dynamically executed painting, in which echoes of the frivolity of Rococo are still perceptible, as a work by Johann Heinrich Ramberg, who was born in Hanover in 1763 and died there in 1840.
From 1781, Ramberg studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London after being called by King George III, who had seen a few drawings Ramberg had executed during a trip. After his training in London, where he studied with Reynolds and Benjamin West, he travelled across Europe for an extended period. He sojourned in Prague and Vienna, where both the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie commissioned portraits from him. In 1793, Ramberg was appointed royal court and cabinet painter. His works combined the influence of German Classicism and contemporary English portrait painting, characterised by swift and confident brushwork. This painting can be compared to Ramberg’s Portrait of Wilhelmine von Hake at Rittergut Ohr near Hamelin.
