Bernhard Keilhau, Monsù Bernardo

Bernhard Keilhau, Monsù Bernardo - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Elsinore 1624–1687 Rome)
Boy with a vase of roses,
oil on canvas, 97.5 x 72 cm, unframed

The present painting can be compared to The Boy with a vase of roses by Bernard Keilhau, dated by Heimburger to the early 1650s (present location unknown, see M. Heimbürger, Bernardo Keilhau detto Monsù Bernardo, Rome, 1988), when the artist sojourned in Venice (1651) and Bergamo (1654).
Bernhard Keilhau, the son of a German painter, was born at Elsinore in Denmark. Keilhau was first trained in Denmark and spent two years in Rembrandt's studio in Amsterdam (1642-1644). He then opened his own studio in Amsterdam before travelling to Italy. He arrived in Venice in 1651, subsequently moving to Bergamo and then to Milan in the following years. In 1656 he settled in Rome where he remained until his death.
Some of his genre paintings have an allegorical meaning, and the present painting may be interpreted as an allegory on the sense of smell.
