Franz Michael Sigmund von Purgau

Franz Michael Sigmund von Purgau - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Linz 1678–1754 Vienna)
Portrait of an aristocratic rider after a parforce hunt with a shot wild boar,
signed lower left: (...) Purgau Fecit,
oil on panel, 36.5 x 45 cm, framed

The present painting is one the artist’s rare portraits, and no other images of hunts with horses are known to have been painted by Purgau. However, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna preserves a monumental view of an imperial sleigh ride in the Hofburg, which took place on the occasion of the wedding of Joseph II and Maria Josepha of Bavaria on 7 February 1765 (inv. no. GG-2591, signed and dated on the reverse: Franz Michael Augustin vo Purgau 1766). In the aforementioned work, in which individual riders and horses are comparable to the present painting for their typology and physiognomy, the portraits were painted by Auerbach. The present painting was executed slightly earlier than the monumental work in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The clothes depicted suggest its dating to before 1754. Also plausible would be an alternative attribution to Purgau’s son, Franz Michael Sigmund the Younger, who was active as a court painter in later years.
