Dr Wolfgang Schulz, Berlin, wrote to the previous owner in 2001 stating that this unknown painter was probably influenced by Jan van Scorel and Maerten van Heemskerck. Schulz: “With all due caution, I should like to suggest ‘Herman Posthumus’, Herman Postma of Friesland, documented in 1536–1542. I would date the execution of the painting to the period 1530–1550 [...]”.
