Tuscan School, 16th Century
Christ carrying the cross,
oil on panel, 67 x 51.5 cm, framed
The present composition derives from Francesco Salviati’s Christ Carrying the Cross (Uffizi, Florence, 1540s), which was in the Medici collections from the 1600s and most likely painted during Salviati’s sojourn in Florence. At least two copies of the painting are known, one in the Galleria Corsini, Rome, and one in the old Frescobaldi Collection in Florence. The present painting differs from the Uffizi picture in its details: The folds of the sleeve and the drapery over Christ’s shoulder, the openings in the crown of thorns and the long arm of the cross, which is not visible over Christ’s shoulder. There is, on the other hand, greater emotional intensity, created by the contrast with the gold background.
An alternative attribution to a Spanish painter in the circle of Alonso Berruguete has been suggested.
