Henry Yates Thompson described this work as follows ‘My picture represents a frigate sailing into a Mediterranean port. There is also a Dutch man-of-war, two or three Spanish vessels, and a Maltese galley alongside the quay. Among the numerous figures is a Knight of Malta standing on the shore. I have been unable to identify the port. The painting of the ships is of first-rate quality, and L.A. Castro must be regarded as an important marine artist of the period’ (see Literature).
