Provenance:
Private collection, Switzerland

Anthonis Blocklandt initially trained in Delft, and later studied under Frans Floris in Antwerp, before returning to Delft and later travelling to Rome in 1572 for a short period. He later settled in Utrecht, when this picture is likely to have been painted (circa late 1570s). The poses of the figures and the slightly exaggerated proportion may reveal an indebtedness to artists he had observed working in Rome.
