Bamileke, Bamenda, Tikar, Cameroon Grassfields: a stool with spider motif.
A typical Cameroon Grassfields stool (northwestern Cameroon), made of light-coloured, hard wood. Carved from a single piece. With an oval seat on four supports. The outer borders of the seat and of the closed, rectangular base frame are decorated with rhombs in relief. Each of the four supports features two spider motifs on the outside. With old usage patina and minor age damage: cracks on the supports with early original repair (glued), minor tears. First half of the 20th century; H: 28 cm, seat: 37 cm x 26 cm. With regard to the spider motif: ground spiders are a popular symbol in the Grasslands of Cameroon. They are regarded as especially cunning, and, since they live in the ground, are thought to be close to the ancestors of man. (ME)
