Mossi, Burkina Faso: 'Biga’ fertility doll.
A typical 'Biga’ fertility doll, as it is worn by the women of the Mossi in their garments, when they wish for children. Made of carved wood, dyed black and brown, with a necklace of 6 blue and 1 white glass pearl as well as with linear incised decoration in the form of a customary tribal hairstyle and scarification marks of the Mossi women. With a good, old usage patina. First half of the 20th century; H: 30 cm. (ME)
