Ascanio Luciani
(Naples 1621–1706)
Portico with Loggia by the Sea, with Boats and Figures,
oil on canvas, 123 x 95 cm, framed
We are grateful to Professor David Ryley Marshall for suggesting the attribution of the present painting to Ascanio Luciani in the studio of Viviano Codazzi after examination in the original.
We are also grateful to Professor Riccardo Lattuada for independently confirming the attribution after examination in the original.
The present painting was traditionally considered as a work by Viviano Codazzi but has recently been given to Ascanio Luciani by Professor David Ryley Marshall and Professor Riccardo Lattuada. Ascanio Luciani was a pupil of Codazzi, and also known as Pseudo-Codazzi, he was also primarily known as an architectural painter. He was a pupil of Codazzi while he was resident in Naples between 1634 and 1647-8 and Marshall has suggested that the present composition can be dated to the mid-1640’s, when Luciani was still in Codazzi´s studio.
Lattuada has observed that the elegant elongated figures in the present work are similar to those painted by Domenico Gargiulo, and can be found in other works from Luciani´s early production.
