Jan Sanders van Hemessen represented this subject a number of times. The present work is closely comparable to the version in the Christian Museum, Esztergom, Hungary, which emphasizes the contrast between the grotesque heads of the torturers and the idealised figure of Christ. The large- scale figures are inspired by the work of Italian artists, although Jan Sanders van Hemessen himself never travelled to Italy.
