Vasili (Wilhelm) Kotarbinsky
(Nieborow,Lodz 1849–1921 Kiev) The Star in the Night, circa 1900, monogrammed WK, oil on canvas, 67 x 151.5 cm, framed, (Rei)
Letter of authentication in Polish issued by Anna Tyczynska, dated March 2007, is available.
After completing his studies at the art school in Warsaw, Vasili Kotarbinsky went to Rome where he was chosen as the best graphic artist. The Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg accorded Kotarbinsky the status of an “artist of the 1st grade”, and in 1895 he was elected as a regular member of the academy. After moving to Kiev in 1887 he took part in the decoration of the St Vladimir cathedral, one of the most important artistic projects in the late 19th century.
Kotarbinsky worked quickly and prolifically, and was particularly popular with those who commissioned his work; these included the famous Kiev patrons N. Tereschenko and V. Chanenko. One of his large works was purchased by the museum of Tsar Alexander III in St. Petersburg.
Kotarbinsky’s talent as a master of monumental painting, a talent which developed during his stay in Rome with Francesco Podesti, corresponded perfectly with the passion of the age for “grand art”. This artist was particularly imaginative, relishing the interpretation of subjects drawn from mythology and the fantastic, employing symbols and creating atmospheres of subtle associations. This elevated and secretive atmosphere permeates his always decorative compositions, even those without human figures. The Star in the Night, obviously intended as a supraporte or part of a wall covering, is one such composition. The great similarity that the present lot shows with other of Kotarbinsky’s works from the same period allows it to be dated around 1900.
We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her assistance in cataloguing this work.
