Francisque Desportes
(Lyon 1849 - circa 1891 Paris) Joseph in the Cellar, signed, dated F. Desportes 1868, oil on canvas, 130 x 97 cm, unframed, (Rei)
Francisque Desportes who initially lived and worked in Lyon before moving to Paris, was a pupil of Antoine Vollon and Henri Lehmann, amongst others. His œuvre was primarily representations of religious and historical subjects. The present lot depicts the Old Testament story of Joseph who, after having sold his half-brother for reasons of jealousy, lands in slavery in Egypt. After refusing the attentions of his master’s wife, she commits perjury, claiming that Joseph had importuned her. Joseph was consequently thrown into prison. However, Joseph soon earns the trust of the prison guard and assists him. The subject of Joseph having successively interpreted the Pharaoh’s dreams, telling him of seven good and seven bad years, was extremely popular in the fine arts, right up into the 19th century.
