“A little west of the Grand Crus route lies Clos de Vougeot, perhaps Burgundy’s most famous vineyard. (...) It was built and run by the Cistercians from neighbouring Cîteaux in the 12th century. Originally the property consisted only of functional buildings, but in 1551 the renaissance wing was erected under the orders of Abbott Jean Loisier. During the revolution the vineyard became the property of the state, divided into plots and sold, the castle allowed to go to ruin. Since 1944 it has been the property of the Confrèrie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an association of winemakers dedicated to promoting the sale of French wine, particularly Burgundy (…)
The main façade of the 16th century, two-storey winery is flanked by two rectangular towers. After passing through a rounded archway one enters the inner courtyard, enclosed by farm buildings dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, and two renovated wings. The cellars with their pointed gables rest on two rows of monolithic 12th century columns; inside four 13th century wine presses.”
