A major exhibition of Wolfgang Herzig’s works was held at Vienna’s Secession in 1970, which press critic Kristian Sotriffer aptled titled "disturbed idyll". Otto Breicha notes of the narrative and yet formal image definition that, “there are reasons behind his ideas, and he is doggedly determined to express them in his paintings. (…) His scenes of daily life are as sharp and precisely composed as possible. Herzig, a Viennese painter from the green province of Styria, doesn’t think much of the baroque bragging which many confuse with the Austrian character.” Herzig wrote of his method of working in 1970, “How do I paint? (…) My works are built up in layers, as with the Old Masters. For I place great importance in durability and constancy…..
