Matthäus Terwesten was born into a well-known family of artists. After several years spent in Rome and Berlin, he settled in The Hague in 1699. A year later he was appointed regent of the Academy of Drawing in The Hague. Terwesten was a portrait and history painter and one of the most striking exponents of 18th-century Netherlandish Classicism.
