Jan van Kessel (Antwerp 1615 – after 1650 Amsterdam)

Jan van Kessel (Antwerp 1615 – after 1650 Amsterdam) - Obrazy starých mistr?

A still life with cabbage, carrots, parsnips and apples, signed at lower right: J. V. Kessel f., oil on panel, 59 x 83.5 cm, framed

Fred Meijer has succeeded in distinguishing between the oeuvre of the present painter of still lifes and those of his Antwerp and Amsterdam namesakes. Jan van Kessel, the son of Hieronymus van Kessel, was trained in the workshops of Jan Brueghel the Elder and Simon de Vos. Having been active in Antwerp, the artist settled in Amsterdam. The knowledge about this artist has only recently been revived. In 1634, Jan van Kessel entered the workshop of Simon de Vos. In 1644, he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Two pupils of Jan van Kessel’s are documented for the year 1649. Dr Klaus Ertz will publish the present painting in his monograph about the Kessel family of painters (forthcoming next year) as an autograph work by Jan van Kessel. The presumed pendant to the present picture, which is signed at lower left, was sold at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam on 7 November 2000 as lot 159 (RKD no. 72351).
