Certificate:
Dr Walther Bernt (1976).
Provenance:
Julius Böhler, art dealer, Munich (1975);
Rhenish private collection.
Literature:
Weltkunst, 1 June 1975, p. 919.
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present painting.
Abraham Brueghel was the most talented and successful son of Jan Brueghel the Younger, who was his teacher and sold a small still life of flowers painted by his son when the latter was only 15 years old. Later on, Abraham travelled to Italy and settled in Rome, where he soon established his reputation as a painter of still lifes. Nine flower pictures by the eighteen-year-old artist were mentioned in the inventory of Don Antonio Ruffo, Brueghel’s patron, as early as 1649. His still lifes reveal a distinct influence from such contemporaries as Michelangelo Campidoglio, called Pace, and Michelangelo Cerquozzi, while on the other hand they also betray his Dutch origins. In the 1670s, Abraham Brueghel moved to Naples, where he concluded his artistic career.
