E. B. Berger, Alte Gemälde aus der Sammlung Ivar Hellberg, Stockholm and Malmö 1938;
W. Stechow, Salomon van Ruysdael, Berlin 1975, p. 84, no. 110.

The present painting is a characteristic work by Salomon van Ruysdael and particularly interesting because of its delicate play of colours in the treetops and its subdued palette. The shiny silvery foliage evokes associations with leaves glittering in the light. The palette, comprising rich nuances of green, ochre, and brown, is characteristic of monochrome landscape painting, which in Holland was also cultivated in the circle of Jan van Goyen. Together with the latter, Ruysdael was to become the most important exponent of that school.
