Jan van den Hecke (Quarmonde 1620–1684 Antwerp)

We are grateful to Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD, The Hague, for identifying the artist (personal communication, February 2010).
Stylistically, and in the handling of the colours, the present painting is related to works by Karel Dujardin and Jan Asselijn. Jan van den Hecke, a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp and lived in Rome for an extensive period of time painting landscapes and still lifes for patrons including the Duke of Bracciano. He returned to Antwerp in 1659. Archduke Leopold William, commissioned a comprehensive series of flower still lifes from him.
