Rare Baroque barometer and double thermometer,
South German region, 18th century. A two-part, altar-like structure of architectural style, veneered in walnut and crossbanded walnut veneer, with gold-painted drapery decoration, a richly moulded and serpentine form, with floral gold-painted carvings, a naturalistically carved faun in a niche, silver-plated applications for the barometer and thermometer, the lower section in walnut, carved in high relief in the form of a rocky outcrop with a stream, with cascading water rendered in gold paint. Ca. 125 x 75 cm. The mercury columns later added and not functioning. In restored condition. (DOC)
