We are grateful to Laurens Schoemaker of the RKD, The Hague, for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot. He compares it with paintings by marine painters like Hendrik Vroom (1562/63–1643), Cornelis Verbeeck (1590–1637/57), Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen (1575/77–1633), and Adam Willaerts (1577–1664) – with the latter especially for the subject of the figures on the beach with the fish market.
