This is a typical work by the Rhinish still life painter, Johann Martin Metz. He was court painter to the Electors of Cologne in Bonn. In 1771 he opened a painting school in Cologne for “figures, landscapes, flowers and embroidery”. Metz was employed by the Elector of Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria, and later by the Elector, Karl Theodor of the Palatinate.
