Giovanni Francesco Castiglione

(Genoa 1641–1710)
The meeting of Isaac and Rebecca, oil on canvas, 150 x 200 cm, framed

The artist was the son and pupil of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and trained at the itinerant workshop of his father. Around about the time of his father’s death in 1664, he received a commission from the Marchese Ottavio Gonzaga the Elder to decorate a room in his villa at Portiolo. It seems that he worked a great deal for the Gonzaga family over the following years. In 1681 he became court painter to Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga (1652–1708). He probably remained in the service of the Duke until the latter died in 1708, thereupon presumably returning to Genoa. He is buried there in the Church of S. Maria di Castello.
