The present painting is one of the extremely rare depictions of the church interiors by Steenwijck, in which there are no figures. The sparseness of the composition permits us a fascinating glimpse of the central nave of this Gothic cathedral. There is a preparatory drawing for our painting in the Albertina, Vienna. Steenwijck captured this typology in similar and slightly differing forms in a multiplicity of interiors. It may be that our painting is the model for a frequently employed, popular composition. Steenwijck is justly seen as one of the early great masters of the church interior. His eponymous father was also an architectural painter.
