Gian Domenico Cerrini,
known as il Cavalier Perugino (Perugia 1609 – 1681 Rome)
Democritus, oil on canvas, 117. 5 x 97 cm, framed
This painting was produced in Rome after the artist’s return from a stay in Florence (c.1656 – 1661). It portrays the philosopher, Democritus, who is pointing with an ironic smile at the lit side of a globe, his typical iconographical attribute. The picture is associated with a work in a Roman private collection, made known by Almaria Tantillo, which depicts Democritus and Heraclitus (see A. M. Tantillo, scheda n. 36, in F. F. Mancini, a cura di, Gian Domenico Cerrini, il Cavalier Perugino tra classicismo e barocco, catalogo della mostra, Cinisello Balsamo 2005, p. 267). According to 2 letters which the painter wrote to Leopoldo de’Medici and the Archduke Ferdinand II on 2 August 1664, the painting of Democritus and Heraclitus was executed shortly before this date (see Firenze, Archivio di Stato, Carteggio Artisti, IX, ins. 16/2 and Mediceo del Principato, 1017, c. 321r). In the case of the present painting a similar date can also be assumed.
