Benedetto Gennari
(Cento 1633 – 1715 Bologna)
Portrait of a Noble Lady wearing a pearl necklace and bracelets, her hair decorated with jewellery, oil on canvas, 100 x 75.5 cm, framed
Certificate: Dott. Emilio Negro, August 2010. Dott. Emilio Negro writes that this remarkable painting has to be incorporated into Benedetto Gennari’s oeuvre. Benedetto Gennari, the nephew of Guercino and one of his closest collaborators, became the most important propagator of the style of his uncle after the latter’s death. Louis XIV, the Sun King, called him to the Paris court, where he ran a flourishing workshop frequented by rich bourgeois and aristocratic families. Later he also received a call from the English court, where he stayed until 1688. In 1692 he returned to Bologna, where, as a consequence of his ‘Northern experiences’, he opened his mind to the classical style practiced by Mignard, Le Brun, and Peter Lely. Negro compares the present work to similar portraits of Anna Maria Mancini, the Duchess of Bouillon, and Cleopatra in the London National Gallery.
