Ludwig Hartmann

(Munich 1835–1902) Waiting to Cross, signed and dated Ludw. Hartmann Munich 1902, oil on canvas, 27 x 48.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Ludwig Hartmann The artist started out with an apprenticeship as a lithographer but at the tender age of 16 was accepted at the Munich Academy under Joseph Schlotthauer. From 1853 to 1854 he was taught by Johann Wagner-Deines who would have a decisive influence on his artistic career. Wagner-Deines introduced him to the 17th century Dutch Masters which were to become his first role model. He continued his education as an autodidact and became friends with Eduard Schleich the Elder whose love of working en plein air influenced his landscape scenes. In addition to landscape paintings, Hartmann’s speciality remained working horses as they worked the land with farmers, towed barges and pulled wagons in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Hartmann was honoured with a variety of awards and appointed a professor in 1891. His meticulously painted oil paintings with their en plein air tendencies demonstrate his mastery of colourism. (Bruckmann‘s Lexikon Münchner Maler, Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhundert, Munich 1982, Vol.2, p.97.)
