Hermann David Salomon Corrodi

(Frascati 1844–1905 Rome) The Fruit Merchant’s Boat by the Gate of a Venetian Convent, signed and inscribed H. Corrodi, Rome, oil on canvas, 167 x 88 cm, framed, (W)

Hermann David Salomon Corrodi Trained together with his brother Arnold under his father, and in 1860 in Geneva with Alexandre Calame. He studied at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome from 1866 and became a member of the local society of artists. In 1872 he travelled to Paris together with Arnold where they met Jean-Louis Gerome and Ernest Meissonier. From Paris, Corrodi made a short trip to London where he stayed with Lawrence Alma-Tadema and met John Everett Millais and Frederick Leighton. Corrodi exhibited at the world exhibition in Munich in 1872 and in Vienna in 1873. Both brothers visited the island of Capri and Vienna. They took long trips to Constantinople, Syria, Egypt, Montenegro and Corsica. These eastern landscapes, in addition to his genres and the vedute of Rome, would determine Corrodis future artistic work. For several years Corrodi spent his summers in Baden-Baden and Bad Homburg where he made useful contacts with noble patrons including members of the German Imperial Family and the British crown. Corrodi’s fanciful vedute are characterized by their richness of invention, their light colouring and illuminating effects.
