Joachim Bueckelaer

(Antwerp c. 1530 - c. 1574), school of the 16th century, A large market scene, oil on canvas, 103 x 166 cm, framed,

Certificate: In his technological certificate of 2 March 2010, Prof. Franz Mairinger dates the origins of the present painting to the late 16th century. Joachim Bueckelaer was one of the most important and popular painters of market and kitchen still lifes in the 16th-century Netherlands. He was a nephew and student of Pieter Aertsen and became a master himself in 1560, at the young age of 20. Due to the strong impact of Pieter Aertsen on Bueckelaer’s work in terms of style, manner, and choice of subject matter, it is often hard to differentiate between the two artists. However, Bueckelaer was not a slavish imitator, but a painter of high and independent standing equal to that of Pieter Aertsen. Bueckelaer even extended his range of subject matter as compared to Aerten’s by interiors featuring fish and genre scenes. Works by Joachim Bueckelaer can be found in almost all the world’s major museums. Provenance: West German private collection
