Francesco Simonini

(Parma 1686-after 1755 Venice or Florence), Four cavalry engagements, oil on panel, 27.1 x 27.5, 27 x 31.8, 27 x 31.7, and 27 x 27.8 cm, framed

Provenance: private collection, Padua. Certificate: Prof. Giuseppe Maria Pilo, Venice. These four cavalry engagements, all of which are of superior quality, are characteristic works by Francesco Simonini, a renowned Venetian battle painter. He worked for prestigious patrons, including the famous field marshal Count Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg, who was compiling what was then the most important collection of contemporary Venetian paintings. It becomes evident how familiar the painter must have been with the work of Francesco Guardi. Simonini started his career in Parma, a student of Ilario Spolverini. Later on he settled in Venice, where he became a leading practitioner of the military genre. Apart from Marshal Schulenburg, he worked for numerous British collectors whom he had met via Joseph Smith, the English consul in Venice. Simonini is documented to have been a member of the Fraglia, the Venetian painters’ guild, between 1740 and 1745. The present four small-sized battle scenes are perfect examples of his compositional and colouristic skills, to which Simonini added his narrative talent.
